The tunneling splitting due to transitions between coexisting minima of different symmetry is considered and approximate expressions for this splitting are given. The contemporary presence of quadratic Jahn‐Teller terms and anharmonic restoring forces is also discussed. The results are a.pplied to the rase of MgO:V 2+ and an hypothesis for the origin of the strirctrrre of the no‐phonon line ( 4 A 2g → 4 T 2g ) in the absorption spectrum is proposed.
