Measurements are made of the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) at the indirect absorption edge of intrinsic Si and GaP at low temperatures and at magnetic fields up to 5 T. By comparison with wavelength modulated spectra it is concluded that the thresholds of the indirect absorption edge for σ + ‐ and σ − ‐ light are rigidly shifted against each other by the magnetic field. The direction of this shift is connected with the type of assisting phonons. This effect can be explained by the splitting of the 1s ground state of the indirect exciton using group theoretical arguments and can be used to estimate hole g ‐values.
