Electron energy loss measurements up to 40 eV have been performed in order to characterize the dielectric properties of 2:1 mullite single crystals. The dielectric tensor components were determined by application of the Kramers‐Kronig analysis. A band gap of (7.7 ± 0.2) eV was found. The results show a distinct anisotropic electronic structure, which is related to the crystallographic details of the 2:1 mullite.
