A detailed BPR investigation is reported about a perturbed O   2 −molecule ion introduced into SrCl 2 single crystals. The O   2 −is associated with an alkali cation located on a next nearest neighbour lattice site. The local distortions produced by this alkali ion influence the orientation of the O   2 −molecule ion.
