The reflectivity spectra of CoCl 2 and CoBr 2 magnetic crystals in the 2 to 11eV region, at 300 and 80 K, are reported. The optical constants are derived by means of a Kramers‐Kronig analysis of their reflectivity data. It is suggested that peaks up to ≈ 8eV are due to electron transfer processes, in which halogen p‐ and cobalt d‐states are involved in localized excitations. The structures beyond 8eV are due to onset of band‐to‐band transitions, from p halogen to s metal states.
