The lattice dynamics of BaO is studied by means of a three‐body force shell model. Phonon dispersion curves and specific heat variations with temperature computed in the present study and those obtained by fitting a rigid shell model are compared with available experimental data. Observed values of the second‐order Raman scattering spectra are also interpreted by using the combined density of states and the critical point analysis approach. An excellent agreement is obtained between theory and experiment.
