The theory of optical side‐bands is developed for a crystal with a cooperative Jahn‐Teller phase transition containing rare‐earth ions. A tight binding scheme is used to describe the rare‐earth energy levels over the whole Brillouin zone. The possible two‐ion couplings which can give rise to side‐bands are discussed; these include the diagonal and off‐diagonal contributions of the virtual phonon interaction.
