The local mode of a substitutional H − ion in KCN single crystals, the U‐center, is measured in the three phases of the crystal. In the cubic phase the local mode peaks at 510 cm −1 with a linewidth of 120 cm −1 . The higher energy phonon side band in the lower temperature phase is found to be displaced 80 cm −1 from the local mode peak. The low‐temperature linewidth of the H   s −local mode is approximately twice that of the D   s −localized vibration. Also in opposition to the behavior in the alkali halides the linewidth keeps a high value even a t temperatures as low as 2 K.
