General formulas are given for the profile of the Mössbaner emission spectra measured within a finite time interval following the preceding decay, under conditions when the initial electronic state of the Mössbauer atom is in non‐equilibrium. The results obtained are valid for an arbitrary case in which the hyperfine interactions change during the relaxation process, as well as for arbitrary ratios between the lifetime of the Mössbauer nucleus, the relaxation time, and a characteristic hyperfine frequency. The case is discussed in detail when the relaxation process is accompanied by a change of the isomer shift. It is shown that, even for rather short relaxation times, the relaxation process reveals itself through a noticeable asymmetry of the emission line.
