Using infrared absorption spectra obtained by CsI pellet technique an investigation is made of the long wavelength optical phonon spectrum of trigonal prismatic type dichalcogenides of molybdenum. Both infrared active modes, E ⊥ C and E ∥ C, a have been observed. These observations are used to calculate the values of various shear and compressional force constants using Wieting's linear chain model. It is found that anisotropism of the force constants decreases as sulfur of MoS 2 is being replaced by selenium and tellurium atoms.
