A variational method is used to determine the polarizability of an electron trapped by an interstitial ion in an ionic crystal. An analytic result for the polarizability is obtained and it reduces to 4.5 in at. units, the exact value of the polarizability for the hydrogen atom. The polarizabilities in alkali and silver halides are evaluated.
