Single crystalsof lanthanum oxide doped with Gd 3+ are grown by the flame fusion method and studied by ESR. The very high zero‐field parameter B   2 0(0.131 cm −l) is of the same order of magnitude asthe energy quantum of X‐band radiation. This gives an abnormal spectrum which has been resolved by computer. These crystals may find interesting applications in solid state masers.
