The present paper is a first step in looking for polaron effects by changing the optical interband absorption due to the presence of an external electric field. It is shown that the dielectric function can be expressed by a generalized one‐particle Green's function G F ( k , t ). A hierarchy of equations of motion is derived for G F ( k , t ) and a generalized Dyson equation is found. Finally, an expression for G F ( k , t ) is obtained, which allows the explicit calculation of the absorption coefficient in the neighbourhood of the absorption edge.
