The optical conversion of F centres to F A (Na) centres induced by repetitive light pulses is investigated above room temperature. The conversion kinetics is investigated as a function of the pulse intensity and repetition rate, as well as of the temperature. The dependence of the initial F A formation rate and the F A density at saturation are found to fit fairly the predictions of a F–F A conversion model in which the thermal dissociation of the ionized F A centre is rate determining. Data on the binding energy of the latter are obtained and subsequently discussed.
