The absorption spectra of single crystals of VI 2 in the region6000 to 26000 cm −1 are reported. The spectra show a large number of narrow absorption lines which disappear above the magnetic orderingtemperature T N = 15 K. The absorption bands are assigned to electronic transitions of the d electrons of vanadium. From the spectra the ligand field splitting 10 Dq = 7870 cm −1 and the Racah parameters B = 540 cm −1 and C = 2322 cm −1 are calculated. The results are compared with data for VC1 2 and VBr 2 .
