Measurements of the interband Faraday rotation were performed on samples with p 10 14 to 10 18 cm −3 in magnetic fields up to 6 T. Furthermore an oscillatory contribution to the interband rotation at 4 K in fields up to 15 T is observed. For a calculation of the interband rotation a band model is used which takes into account the strong coupling between the H 4 and H 5 valence bandsand the H 61 and H 62 conduction bands. The good agreement of theory and experiment gives evidence for the validity of the band model near point H of the Brillouin zone. The oscillations are explained in this model by the inversion asymmetry splitting of the H 4 band.
