From an experimental study, dispersion curves are plotted of three extraordinary and one ordinary polariton modes in α‐quartz in the range 350 to 500 cm −1 . A theoretical formulation of the two‐beam method, experimentally used, makes the possible coupling between E and A 2 vibration modes obvious and the simultaneous existence of ordinary and extraordinary polaritons. The experimentally obtained dispersion curves are compared to the corresponding calculated branches. The agreement is quite good.
