A new general criterion for the existence of band gaps in disordered alloys is given. It is represented as a condition for the generalized logarithmic derivatives in the potentials of the alloying constituents at spheres circumscribing the Wigner‐Seitz cells. Other three‐dimensional gap criteria published up to now are contained as special cases. The application of the new criterion is not restricted to approximations for the potentials and to the condition of corresponding states in the systems of pure constituents. A comparison with criteria for one‐dimensional systems is given.
