Abstract Paramagnetic resonance spectra of Eu 2+ and Gd 3+ ions at Ba 2+ sites in BaCl 2 were measured at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature. There was little difference between the spectra of the same ion taken at the different temperatures. The important parameters in the spin Hamiltonian are: Eu 2+ (300 °K): b   2 0 =24 × 10 −4 cm −1 , b   2 2= −450 × × 10 −4 cm −1 ; Eu 2+ (77 °K): b   2 0= 33 × 10 −4 cm −1 , b   2 2= −467 × 10 −4 cm −1 ; Gd 3+ (77 °K): b   2 0= 84 × 10 −4 cm −1 , b   2 2= −461 × 10 −4 cm −1 ; g =1.992. The corresponding theoretical values are: Eu 2+ : b   2 0= 104 × 10 −4 cm −1 , b   2 2= −357 × 10 −4 cm −1 ; Gd 3+ : b   2 0=99 × × 10 −4 cm −1 , b   2 2= −334 × 10 −4 cm −1 ; g = 1.993.
