The nature of the charge carriers in magnetite is discussed both from theoretical arguments and experimental evidence. Estimates are given for the bandwidth, the polaron localization energy, and the strength of electron‐electron interactions. The low mobility, the ferromagnetic value of the exchange constant J BB and NMR results in the low temperature phase are explained qualitatively in terms of electrons localized in polaronic Fe‐Fe bonds.
