A simple model is developed for the study of substitutional defects. Region I consists of nearest neighbours to the defect site. In region II, the relaxation is taken ∼1/ r 2 and the constant is determined from the equilibrium condition. Using harmonic approximation an extremely simple expression for the heat of formation is obtained. Values of heat of formation obtained from this expression show good agreement with experiment and with those obtained from more sophisticated models.
