The linear optical birefringence of DyPO 4 shows anomalous temperature behaviour between 10 and 150 K. The effect is considered to be due to the excitation of a higher crystal field component of the 6 H 15/2 ground state of Dy 3+ . From this the separation between the lowest and the first excited state is determined as Δ/ k = (97 ± 3.5) K.
