It is shown that existing theories of the diffraction due to substitutional disorder are partly wrong and partly do not correspond to the case of a large number of crystallographically equivalent positions in the unit cell. The pertinent diffraction theory is elaborated. Certain striking differences are found between the new results and those of former theories. So it is shown, that some experimental inferences referring to spinels and reported in the literature are unfounded.
