EPR measurements on TbAsO 4 , TmAsO 4 , and TmVO 4 doped with 1 to 2% Gd ions were carried out at temperatures below T D , the critical temperature for the Jahn‐Teller phase transition. A spin‐Hamiltonian allowing for lower symmetry and magnetic interaction is fitted to the spectra of the Gd ions. Low symmetry parameters B   2 2are determined. The parameters of the magnetic interaction for Gd ions in the Tb and Tm host crystals are extremly different.
