Raman spectra of iron or cobalt doped MgO single crystals have been obtained. A strong band which lies between 250 and 330 cm −1 for the cobalt doped crystal and between 100 and 350 cm −1 for the iron doped sample appears in the spectrum and has been assigned to resonance modes. Using experimental frequencies, the central and shear force constant changes β r . and γ r have been calculated.
