The possibility, the accuracy, and the necessary experimental conditions for a direct determination of the phonon density of states by means of coherent inelastic neutron scattering on polycrystalline samples in the case of non‐cubic material is tested by model calculations of both the phonon density of states and the spectrum of scattered neutrons corresponding to measurements carried out by Eremeev et al. on Mg. It is found that apart from the low energy range the necessary experimental conditions can easily be fulfilled and that for correcting the experimental results a method earlier proposed by Gorbachev et al. is appropriate.
