Optical absorption spectra of the Co 2+ ion in CdCl 2 crystals were measured in the energy region from 4000 to 40000 cm −1 . The temperature dependence of the spectra was also measured in the temperature range from 80 to 710 K. Observed absorption bands were assigned to forbidden d–d transitions of the Co 2+ ion allowed by vibrations and to charge transfer transitions. From the analysis of the structure of the absorption band, the strength of the trigonal crystal field is estimated.
