A metastable Z 2 center triplet state excitable by optical irradiation has been found in KCl:Ca, KCl:Sr, NaCl:Ca, NaCl:Sr. Electron spin resonance measurements yield the following symmetry axes: [100] for centers in KCl:Ca, KCl:Sr, NaCl:Ca; [100], [011], and [0 1 1] for NaCl:Sr. Optical measurements of Z 2 centers in KCl:Ba show the existence of a [100] symmetry axis. Center models are discussed.
