The MgKß emission band has been measured of Mg(OH) 2 single crystals. The MgKP band shows two maxima at 1297 and 1292 eV having an intensity ratio of about 2: 1. They are assigned to 3T lu → 1s and 2T lu → 1s transitions involving the lπ and 3σ molecular orbitals of the OH − ligands, respectively. The assignment is based on octahedral symmetry oh, even though the [Mg(OH) 2 ]‐polyhedra in Mg(OH) 2 have trigonal symmetry, D 3d . The results are compared with known data from MgO and with recent MO‐LCAO calculations.
