Phonon dispersion relations in [111] direction for SiC and ZnS polytypes have been computed on the basis of a two‐neighbour short‐range force constant model. Satisfactory agreement is observed between theory and experiment. This agreement shows the important fact that a short range force system is operative in these polytypes, the forces up to second neighbours are the most dominant.
