Experiments show that except for the Peierls instability the conduction electrons in K 2 [Pt(CN) 4 ]Br 0.30 ·3H 2 O behave as nearly free electrons in the c ‐direction. This is concluded from the optically deduced effective mass m * ≈ m e , from the oscillator strength sum rule and from energy and oscillator strength of the first interband transition. It is shown that this result although unexpected at first sight is a natural consequence of the one‐dimensionality of the system.
