The magnetic susceptibility of UP and UAs have been measured as a function of temperature from 4.2 to 1000 K and the results are compared with published results in the literature. From the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, the most likely 5f 3 electronic configuration of the uranium ion in these two compounds are deduced using a nonperturbative (full J ‐mixing) crystal‐field theory.
