The preparation of homogeneous samples of Al x In 1– x Sb alloys from a stoichiometric melt is considered. A slow horizontal Bridgman method with ingots encapsulated in liquid B 2 O 3 has been used to provide samples suitable for optical reflectance measurements and details of the variation of composition with position along the ingot are given. Electroreflectance measurements, using the electrolyte technique, have been made on samples cut from cross sectional slices, and the variation of the transition energy with composition has been determined for the E 0 , E 0 + Δ 0 , E 1 and E 1 + Δ 1 peaks. The experimental values of E 0 , Δ 0 and Δ 1 as a function of x are compared with the previously proposed theoretical equations based on the concept of interband mixing due to disorder of the lattice, and the significance of some of the energy parameters in these equations is discussed.
