Infrared absorption spectra of small BaTiO 3 crystals which have been reported by various investigators are compared with detailed theoretical calculations performed for spherical samples. The porperties of the infrared active modes and the soft mode in small crystallites are discussed. It is found that a shift of the transition temperature is not expected to occur in grains of the size usually employed in infrared absorption measurements, but will appear in extremely small crystallites, less than about 120 Å in size.
