The Stark effect of the U‐center ultraviolet absorption has been observed in KBr and RbCl crystals. Changes of the absorption coefficient due t o the electric field have been measured as a function of photon energy. From these data the position of the excited level 1 S(1s, 2s) and the dipole matrix element 〈 2 S(1s, 2s)z 2 P(1s, 2p) have been evaluated.
