Abstract The spectrum of magnetic excitons propagating in a finite linear chain of ions with a singlet ground state is studied. The calculations a reperformed for a two‐level (singlet‐singlet) system. It is assumed that the energy interval between the singlets for an ion localized at the end of the chain is different from that for ions within the chain. A formula for the energy of excitons propagating in such a chain is derived, and the conditions for the occurrence of modes localized at the ends of the chain are determined.
