A discussion of inelastic light scattering by lattice vibrations associated with unstable modes responsible for the occurrence of displacive phase transitions in solids is presented. An extension of Landau's average field theory of phase transitions, as proposed by Levanyuk and Sannikov, is used to derive the temperature dependence of the eigenfrequencies and of the scattered light intensities.
