It is shown that the cut‐off energy ξ in the Mahan‐Nozière‐de Dominieis (MND) theory of X‐ray absorption thresholds, ϵ 2 (ω) = A 2 [(hω ‐ E T )/ξ] −α , is constrained by existing data to be almost implausible small for Li: ξ < 0.5 eV. If ξ is significantly smaller, ξ < 0.08 eV, then inelastic scattering experiments designed to convert the rounded Li threshold into a peaked edge may not be sucessful and may not test the MND theory.
