The g ‐value and the most important crystal field parameters of Gd 3+ in orthorhombic (D   2h 16 ) BaCl 2 , are determined at room temperature: g = 1.994 (isotropic), b   2 0= ± 90 × × 10 −4 cm −1 , and b   2 2= ∓444 × 10 −4 .cm −1 . The corresponding theoretical values are g = 1.993, b   2 0= 85 × 10 −4 cm −1 , and b   2 2= −324 × 10 −4 cm −1 . A comparison of the results with values for Eu 2+ and Gd 3+ ions at Pb 2+ sites in PbCl 2 , and PbBr 2 , is made.
