The emission and transmission spectra of extremely thin high‐quality CdS single crystals are investigated from 1.8 to 77 °K. At low temperatures using stationary excitation by a high‐pressure mercury lamp an emission spectrum with a pronounced peak 3.2 meV below the energy of the A Γ 6‐exciton is observed, which is characteristic of all thin crystals investigated. The experimental facts, including kinetic phenomena, suggest an explanation of the emission in terms of a system of interacting excitonic molecules. The molecule binding energy is found to be 3.2 meV.
