The density of the acoustical phonon states of an elastically isotropic solid is found with allowance for its surface. The difference is discussed between the surface “thermodynamic” density of states and the local one describing the spectral distribution of vibrations of the individual atoms. The surface lattice heat capacity and the Kapitza thermal resistance are considered as the characteristic applications of the formalism developed.
