A theory of the fine structure of Wannier‐Mott excitons, due to the interaction of the electron and hole with the polarizable vibrations of the lattice, is developed. The “non‐hydrogen‐like” corrections to the exciton energy, and also the corrections to the effective mass of the exciton, depending on the internal state of the exciton, are calculated.
