The spin‐flop transition has been reconsidered in the molecular‐field approximation at 0 K. A general free energy expression, which includes isotropic and anisotropic exchange, first and second uniaxial single‐ion anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinsky‐Moriya antisymmetric exchange, is the starting point for the calculations. Both exact and approximate relations are derived for the critical fields. By setting the appropriate parameters equal to zero these relations are readily reduced to the corresponding equations for better known simpler systems. An expression is found for the angular dependence of the spin‐flop transition, and the importance of second uniaxial single‐ion anisotropy is discussed.
