Infrared absorption measurements show that the depolarization field in small crystals of BaTiO 3 prevents the zero wavevector optical mode from becoming soft. Yet the transition temperature is found to be the same for small crystals and bulk. We suggest that the phase transition in small particles is driven by soft modes with nonzero wavevectors.
