Hyperfine structure splittings for the M = − ½ → ½ transition of trivalent gadolinium in single crystal thorium oxide have been measured from 1.25 to 350 K. The temperature dependence of these splittings is interpreted in terms of a modified Šimánek‐Orbach theory.
