It is shown that the absorption tail in CdSe:Cr (d 4 ) is due to photoionization of Cr impurities. The absorption spectrum is well described by a formula proposed by Allen in a wide range of Cr concentration ranging from 5 × 10 17 to 5 × 10 19 cm −3 . The value of the matrix element of the optical transition from Cr (d 4 ) to the conduction band suggests that the transition is from the extended s‐like bonding orbital rather than from 3d orbital. For high Cr concentrations about 10 19 cm −3 interaction effects between impurities occur. It is also shown that two charge states: Cr 2+ and probably Cr 3+ are possible in CdSe.
