Analytical methods cannot be applied to problems of dislocation pile‐ups when the number of dislocations is large or when the stress field involved is not uniform. A general method is given of computation based on the decomposition of a dislocation loop into elementary loops. By these one can determine the configuration and the number of dislocations in a pile‐up in the case of every sort of stress field or barrier.
