The results of spin–lattice relaxation (SLR) measurements of the O   2 −oxygen centre in KCl, KBr, and KI are given. The pulse saturation method was used. The results are compared with those of Castner, who used a different experimental technique, and the causes of the differences are briefly analysed. A theoretical calculation of the direct process, different in some respects from previous ones, is also summarized. The results of a numerical calculation for the angular variation of the SLR are given and discussed.
