The isomer shifts of Fe 2+ and Fe 3 + in CaF 2 and of Fe 2+ , Fe 2+ , and F e3+ in 57 Co‐doped CaO have been measured by the Mössbauer effect. The results are compared with existing data of the isomer shift of multivalent iron in KMgF 3 and MgO. The change of the electron density at the nucleus of the aliovalent iron is related to the covalency of the host lattices. Extrapolating to zero covalency n lower limit of the isomer shift calibration constant of 57 Fe, α = −0.25(3) α 3 0 mm s‐1 , was deduced.
