The energy of localized modes due to a nearest‐neighbour pair defect in a simple cubic Heisenberg ferromagnet is investigated. Particular attention is paid to the p‐symmetry mode oriented along the direction of the inter‐impurity bond since for this mode the energy depends on the impurity‐impurity exchange constant. It is found that the results of a two‐parameter variational calculation, along the lines suggested by Tucker and Kilby, are in very good agreement with those of an exact treatment.
